Abstract

This article explores the linguistic, cultural, and semantic challenges involved in translating toponyms between English and Uzbek. Due to their deep historical roots, symbolic meanings, and culturally embedded etymologies, place-names often require more than a literal translation. The study analyzes structural differences, phonetic patterns, and cultural associations of toponyms in both languages, demonstrating how these features influence translation choices. Various translation strategies—including transcription, transliteration, semantic adaptation, creation of functional equivalents, and explanatory translation—are examined to determine their effectiveness in cross-linguistic communication. The findings contribute to translation studies, intercultural communication, and onomastics by highlighting the importance of cultural competence in the rendering of geographical names.
